Sebastian Díaz Morales: Pasajes I

Sebastian Díaz Morales: Pasajes I

Buenos Aires appears in this video series as an endless maze where an optional image of reality takes shape. This is the geography of a story expressed in an alteration to the normal, which arises from a montage of urban spaces. The urban reworking of the story is an attempt to regenerate the body of a city and its images in the form of an alternative geography.

Lucas Bambozzi: Revenge is a Kind of Wild Justice

Lucas Bambozzi: Revenge is a Kind of Wild Justice

In summer in São Paulo, on days of heavy rain, some trees fall. This usually causes traffic turmoil and upset drivers, who believe the city was made for cars and blame the trees for disturbing the traffic. Amid so much concrete, with no space to fix their roots, and surely stressed, we imagine some of these trees trapping the cars as hostages. The video shows the documentation of the work. REVENGE IS A KIND OF WILD JUSTICE, a permanent site-specific installation set at Fazenda Serrinha (70km from São Paulo), which consists of an actual car suspended by a trap, suggesting the situation described above. The phrase is attributed to Francis Bacon, English author, courtier and philosopher (1561 – 1626).

Patrick Topitschnig: Scream

Patrick Topitschnig: Scream

Scream is an ironic homage to Samuel Beckett‘s Breath (1969). At the apex of his minimalistic work, Beckett conceived this short theater piece. Breath is to be realized with Beckett‘s meticulous instructions within its five acts. Beckett himself describes the work as „a farce in five acts“. Whether he relates this to the content of the piece or the piece itself remains uncertain. But certainly it is one of the most extensively interpreted pieces of theater.

Ma Qiusha: All my Sharpness comes from your Hardness

Ma Qiusha: All my Sharpness comes from your Hardness

This 26-minute-long video made in 2011, All My Sharpness Comes from Your Hardness, allowed Ma Qiusha to freely explore displaced memory. The footage shows only Ma’s legs and feet wearing ice skates as she is being dragged backward across a variety of road surfaces in Beijing. The skates go from blunt to razor sharp depending on the road surface. The road showed is the one she used to walk from her grandmother’s to her home. When she was young, she walked it many times. This video is an allegory on the tortuous journey that Ma has traveled since those days of walking to her grandmother’s house, it is an autobiography of sorts.

Ma Qiusha: Mars

Ma Qiusha: Mars

Mars presents the audience with an expanse of fine red sand. A macro lens shows the astonishing texture of red sand particles while aerial shots display sand dunes that show no trace of human activity. This perspective transcends individual experience by depicting the mysterious surface of a celestial body. The huge waves of red sand rolls endlessly like the infinite expanding of the universe. While the exhibition’s Chinese title - a transliteration of the English word Wonderland - seems devoid of meaning, it provides a fertile ground for the imagination to roam free. It takes the body’s corporeal existence as the starting point and casts the audience into the midst of a desert which echoes the sound of the universe.

Ma Qiusha: Rainbow

Rainbow, the one shot with a high-definition camera, presents to the viewers a dream-like scene: three teenage girls in the dress for figure skating are turning around, hand in hand, to mash the tomatoes under their skating shoes. The acnes on the young faces, the tiny meshes on the stockings over the vigorous legs, the splashing crimson juice of the fruit, the glowing edges of the glass vessels, and the blade of the skating shoes, all these details seem to be amplified or more vivid through the HD camera.

Ma Qiusha: Snow White

Ma Qiusha was born in 1982, she currently lives and works in Beijing. In early 2015, the French luxury brand Dior selected Ma to be one of 17 international female artists invited to create works cogitating on how Dior relates to contemporary art. The only stipulation was to include a pair of Dior gloves in her video. The invitation from Dior allowed Ma to continue an investigation of fairy tales that first started with the 2009 video Snow White, in which the princess is seen trapped within a glass-enclosed musical box.
