Voyage by Daniela Thomas

Voyage by Daniela Thomas

Voyage is about a young man that wakes up, startled, in the bunk bed of a tiny bedroom. We hear clicking sounds, as he fiddles with something off-screen. Carrying a long black case under his arm, he climbs down the narrow corridors and stairways of a favela. Eyes follow him at every turn, focused on the black case. Standing in a crowded bus that crosses the endless sea of favelas on the outskirts of Rio, he makes people uncomfortable with the case. Next, he is on a train, eyes lost in the distance. Later in his long journey, he is on another bus in a richer part of town. As he finally gets a seat, clutching his black case, he makes the girl next to him very anxious. Time passes, and he falls asleep alone in his seat. The sound of a police officer’s siren wakes him up. He opens the black case. Inside we see the shiny keys of a clarinet. Fingers move over the keys, as we hear Melodia Sentimental by Hector Villa-Lobos. Slowly the image reveals that the young man playing the clarinet is our traveller and that we are in a stately room where a young orchestra plays the beautiful Villa-Lobos piece. A segment of Stories on Human Rights 2009 produced by ART for The World commissioned by the High Commissioner of Human Rights with award-winning filmmakers and artists, using the universal language of art to sensitize people across the planet to what “human rights” actually means.

Visions of Flesh and Fire

Visions of Flesh and Fire

Step into the fevered imagination of Hieronymus Bosch, where pleasure, punishment, and prophecy collide. In Garden of Earthly Delights, we explore a triptych that unfolds like a dream turned nightmare. From the quiet creation of the world to a garden of sensual delight and a hellscape of chaos, Bosch weaves a vision both seductive and terrifying. Painted between 1490 and 1510, this extraordinary work invites endless interpretation-perhaps a warning, perhaps a mirror, or perhaps something stranger still. In this slow art video, linger within the surreal beauty and moral tension of one of history’s most enigmatic masterpieces. Veil of Sorrow

Veil of Sorrow

In The Descent from the Cross, we witness Rogier van der Weyden’s haunting meditation on grief and grace. Painted around 1435, this masterpiece captures the moment Christ is lowered from the cross, his lifeless body held with aching tenderness by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Every figure, from the swooning Virgin to the silent mourners, is shaped in sorrow and light. Van der Weyden’s precise lines and vivid colors invite us into a scene where pain becomes sacred and time seems to pause. This slow art video offers space to reflect on loss, devotion, and the quiet power of sacred beauty. Alfredo Jaar,

Alfredo Jaar, "Claro-Escuro"

“The old world is dying, the new one is slow to be born" by Alfredo Jaar is a new work entering the Usina de Arte collection and invites reflection on the dangers of civilizational transitions. “Images are not innocent”, Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar often warns. Those who look at the neon phrase of his work “Claro-Escuro” (2015) under the wall of what was the largest alcohol distillery in Brazil in the 1950s are sure of this, and which since 2015, in its cultural reconversion, has made up a socioeconomic development project through art, education, and environment. In this chiaroscuro, monsters appear” establishes a permanent residence at Usina de Arte, expanding the equipment collection with large installations by international artists. On a small sand-island in the North Sea a figure seems locked in a Sisyphean quest. A tiny figure (filmed from a drone) walks purposely around an island’s edge. As the tide rises, the water is eating away at the island’s coast and the figure’s path spirals inwards. Eventually the island has become a dot of dry sand, before vanishing beneath the waves. Terrestrial Spirits

Terrestrial Spirits

The short film by Yossi Galanti explores the visual manifestation of various environmental and ecological themes, focusing on the interaction between humans and their surroundings. The first location is an urban nature area in the heart of Jerusalem, where Johanan, a homeless person lives throughout the year. The second is the shores of the Sea of Galilee, which serve as places for seasonal tourist activities. In both locations insects, animals, and humans appear to be preoccupied with seeking food and shelter while simultaneously consuming their surroundings, each as part of the wider and invisible global system. The montage of interlaced events and places allows a visual comparison that contrasts the characters and their actions. Creating a supposedly randomized plot of intertwined scenes is an attempt to devise a visual reflection of simultaneous realities and thus a broader look at the current values of our culture.

The grey box

The grey box

Throughout South Eastern Australia, woodlands with Grey Box trees (Eucalyptus microcarpa) are under threat by habitat destruction and climate change. This video was recorded in Grey Box woodland along the border of Belair National Park in South Australia. Behind the camera, the Park adjoins a railway line, a road, and houses, where much of the habitat is badly degraded. Invisible to the viewer, human activities are heard in the audio underneath the calls of native birds living in the woodlands. The video animations subtly distort the appearance of the woodland, forcing us to look more closely at the potential for loss right before our eyes. Film by Ian Gibbins

Patsiata, phantom of dust

Patsiata, phantom of dust

Owens Lake lies to the east of Sierra Nevada mountain chain in California. The Paiute tribes called it Patsiata. This body of water once covered an area of 280 square kilometres and had an average depth of 12 metres. The first explorers in the region reported that it sustained abundant aquatic life. Agricultural irrigation, followed by the diversion of the Owens River to the Los Angeles aqueduct, caused a gradual drop in the water level, until the lake dried up completely. Owens Lake was transformed into a vast arid and desolate plain; when the desert winds blew across the deposits of soda ash, huge dust clouds formed. Sand storms became a problem as toxic particles gave rise to respiratory diseases among the populace. To keep this under control, gravel was spread across the basin and the sediment kept damp. Today, nearly half of the aqueduct’s water is rechanneled toward Owens Lake in order to re-start plant growth in the lacustrine clay and restore the depleted ecosystems. Ponds have been created for migratory birds. Film by Isabelle Hayeur
