Ouroboros by Ben Readman is an audio-visual wordless narrative that engages with emotional, psychological, mythological, and philosophical discourse on topics such as climate anxiety, migration, grief, and the cycles of life within the context of the Anthropocene. It narrates the journey of a mysterious avian humanoid from its origin through an existential voyage of exploration, achievement, and enlightenment, to its demise and subsequent metamorphosis. The hero character urges us to listen to and learn from the collective acquired wisdom over millennia of existence. The film features diverse global landscapes, prehistoric animals, the cosmos, and the sublime in nature, serving as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. Short film by Enrico Casagrande about the controversial practice of debbio (slash and burns), still widely used today in the campanias of the Po Valley. Debbio is the practice of burning the soil after harvesting, both to speed up fertilization through the burning of residual shrubs and to prevent possible diseases from lingering in the soil. The element of fire, its march, and the smoke enveloping the field, become the elements that give rhythm to the film, a kind of symphony inspired by De Seta’s short films.

The project is an artistic enquiry into the uncertainties and fragilities, fears and hopes, contradictions and paradoxes in pace with our times. The film portrays the layers of Lyn’s metaphoric and physical journey in a lost crate through an atmospheric alignment of painting, music and classical ballet. It was filmed at Chambers Fine Art, New York, by Filmerei, Zurich.

The project started on December 12th, 2019, with 100 genetically modified Salmo Salar eggs at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Matre, Norway, and culminated with 16 salmons on March 3rd, 2022.
