William Kentridge: Triumphs and Laments - A Project for Rome 2016

In 2016, William Kentridge was at work on a monumental frieze, called Triumphs and Laments: A Project for Rome, to be installed along the banks of the Tiber River. The work was designed to span 550 metres of an embankment of the river on Piazza Tevere: a procession of 55 drawings delving into the history of Rome from ancient times to the present, integrated with references to current world happenings, which open up conversations about the nature of history and how it is recorded; our capacity to remember and to forget.

The feeling of emptiness as a quiet place where anything can happen, causes an anguish which is similar to the feeling of instability and disorientation of vertigo in front of things around us and those bigger than us, physically, as can be a mountain or the sea, and emotionally, as may be the insecurity of making a choice. Vertigo is a distortion of sensory perception that affects the movement of a person giving him a wrong perception of movement in space, characterized by loss of balance.

Christiane Geoffroy chose the sea angel as a poetic emblem of the struggle against rising acid levels in the oceans.

A Short Story

Short Story (2020) by Steve Sabella was done right as the coronavirus started spreading. It was as a reminder that, deep down, we’re all human. We were all scared and unsure if this was the end, or what it all meant. Sabella wanted to write a story about who we are and where we’re going as people, during this big change. Sabella did shoot these hands as he was in Ireland in 2007 in an elderly hospice, he was looking at dying people, people in their last days of life. Why? At that point, he wanted to mirror to the whole world the pain of living back then in a permanent state of exile.
