After the Stone Caravaggio’s David Victorious over Goliath refuses the triumph the title promises. This slow art experience stays close as a boy bends over the body of the giant, working a cord through his hair, his own back and shoulder caught in a single raking light. Everything else is darkness. There is no crowd, no gesture toward glory, only the physical work of what has happened. The stillness is the subject. This work can be seen at The Museo Nacional del Prado.
