Camillo Capelli’s ceiling fresco in the Sala a Fogliami (Foliage Room) of Venice’s Palazzo Grimani envelops viewers in a lush, immersive canopy of Renaissance imagination. Painted circa 1560–1563, the vaulted ceiling blossoms with intertwining branches, fruit-laden trees, and a vibrant array of birds and animals, some depicted in dynamic, even predatory, poses. This botanical fantasia draws inspiration from ancient Roman decorative traditions, reinterpreted through a Renaissance lens to celebrate nature’s abundance and complexity. The surrounding lunettes feature enigmatic grotesques and symbolic rebuses, possibly alluding to the personal trials of the palace’s patron, Giovanni Grimani.
