Van Gogh’s Raising of Lazarus reimagines Rembrandt’s etching with a striking omission. Christ is absent. What remains is human struggle and the quiet hope of resurrection. Lazarus rises from the tomb with a red beard, a detail that links the figure to Van Gogh himself. The two women beside him are modeled after friends from Arles, Mrs Roulin and Mrs Ginoux. Over time, the pigments have faded, softening the contrast between warm earth and cool flesh, but the emotional force endures. In what is missing, Van Gogh reveals what matters most.
